Third Thursday Talks - Formerly Big Mountains South of the Equator! The Tectonics and Geology of the White Mountains of Maine and New Hampshire.
Speaker: Prof. J. Dykstra Eusden
Department of Geology
Bates College, Lewiston, Maine
Have you ever wondered how tall the ancestral White Mountains were? How and when did the tectonic plates move from south of the equator about 400 million years ago to their present latitude here in Maine and New Hampshire? Or something even more basic, like...what's the difference between schist and granite? Bring your questions and come listen to Dykstra Eusden talk about the geologic and tectonic history of the mountains in our backyard.
Eusden is a professor of geology at Bates College in Lewiston where he teaches courses like "Katahdin to Acadia: Field Geology in Maine" and "Geology of the Maine Coast by Sea Kayak." He went to Bates for his B.S., University of New Hampshire for his M.S., and Dartmouth College for his Ph.D. His research is on the ancient bedrock and tectonic history of New Hampshire as well as active tectonics in New Zealand. He has published “The Geology of New Hampshire’s White Mountains” (2013) and "The Presidential Range: Its Geologic History and Plate Tectonics" (2010) both by Durand Press. The books will be available for sale at the talk.
